Iceland with a One Day Layover

One of the biggest pieces of advice I tell people when they are deterred by flight prices, is to consider how you might make flights cheaper by changing them up a bit. I'll discuss this more in a different post, but for example on this quick layover... Some friends and I were planning to fly into Dublin for a trip to Ireland, but the flight from Minneapolis was close to $1,300! I certainly couldn't afford that! Luckily, after some flight searching, I found a direct flight into Reykjavik for less than half of that, with a roundtrip flight to Dublin for $120. This savings plan also gave us about 24 hours in Iceland, which I was so excited to share with my pals who hadn't been before! We rented an automatic car through Enterprise for $30/apiece and booked a room at Hotel Muli for $40/apiece because it offered free parking, and was fairly close to the airport. Then we set off for our adventure of Iceland with a One Day Layover!

We started at our furthest point for the day, Skogafoss, a massively gorgeous waterfall. There was a light rain, but the weather was wonderful! We hiked up to the top of the waterfall and there's a path that goes about as far as you're willing to take it. We hiked back for a bit and also saw Steinbogafoss, soaking in the scenery, but also knowing we had a busy day!

Then we were off to Seljalandsfoss. Once again, you can walk all the way up to get several perspectives of the waterfall. When you are at the base of the waterfall, you can continue walking and it leads you to an opening on the right where a little stream is coming out. If you're feeling adventurous, I highly recommend walking the rocks back there and being rewarded with Gljufrabui Waterfall. It's an absolute treasure!! (Pictured below)

Next on our journey was the Geyser Geothermal Area, followed by Gullfoss. We loved walking through all of the geothermal activity, seeing the heated water bubble up and Strokkur Geyser erupt several times.

We ended our day with a quick dinner on the way to the hotel, ready to enjoy hot showers and a heavy sleep before starting our next adventure in Ireland!

Though this quick trip did not boast any culinary masterpieces, from previous trips to Iceland, I would highly suggest a lamb burger from any gastropub, fish soup or lobster bisque. Of course, whether you are eating from the gas station (it's a thing there!) or in a restaurant, be prepared to never enjoy the price points!
