Idaho's Big Potato Hotel

Best Spuds!

You'll continue to see that my mom is one of my top travel pals, and this story is no different. I'm always looking for a cheap deal and a bargain trip, but in a change of pace, this time there was just somewhere that I really wanted to go. Where, you ask? Boise, Idaho.

I had been scrolling through AirBnb, because sometimes I like looking at the unique stays. Typically they are in far off and expensive destinations, but when I saw The Big Potato Hotel in Boise, Idaho, it was quickly added to the lists of adventures I never knew I'd wanted until that moment!

I called my mom the next morning on my way to work to ask if she was interested in sleeping in a potato with me. I didn't even have to tell her where, and she immediately said yes. The only next step was to plan the weekend. We were looking for a weekend in the summer, and this spud gets a lot of action! We found a weekend in August that worked for both of us, booked our flights to Boise, and set off for a spud-tastic extravaganza! If you're also looking to embark on this adventure, you'll want to make sure you book a car, as it's in a completely remote area that you'll be able to get an Uber to, but not from. If you're like me and are disgusted with car rental prices since the Pandemic, be sure to use Turo for much cheaper rentals! https://turo.com/

Not sure I have ever been more excited walking up to an accommodation as I was this day. And I mean it when I say... you are in the middle of NOWHERE. But that was part of the adventure. Check-in was quite easy, there is a code on the door into the potato, and inside was probably close to what the inside of a potato might look like.

There are no windows, so it's certainly not for the claustrophobic, but it is perfectly cozy! The host had provided us free Idaho Spud candy, (which has nothing to do with potatoes, except maybe it's shaped like one? But they are delicious!) and little potato pins that I added to my backpack. There is a vinyl record player and plenty of great records. The host also had several books to choose from, and some fun cards games that my mom and I enjoyed playing. There's no tv, so if you're not going solo, definitely go with someone you enjoy talking to!

We were both pleasantly surprised with the bathroom amenities! The bathroom is in the silver silo, in the left of the first posted photo. And although I don't REALLY know what a luxury bathroom looks like, with a deep two-person soaking tub, sky light, fireplace, and then a gorgeous brick standing shower. It was relaxing and luxurious for both of us!

Another highlight of the potato is Dolly the Cow! She is so friendly (though, I have zero experience with cows, so I was a bit skittish around her!). The AirBnb host arranges to have someone fill a container filled with Dolly approved snacks so that you can feed her and win her over easily. My mom absolutely loved petting and feeding Dolly!

All in all, this is a fun and unique experience to have with a partner or a pal! It gave us a reason to get to Idaho and explore beyond the potato! (I will get to that itinerary in another post!) But I highly recommend getting away from it all, and getting into this tater!
